Weekend Follies

Well, let's see...I had a small party on Friday. I got to meet a whole new crew of great folks, so I consider it a great success. I made tacos and only ate one...on a flour tortilla even. Another success. (My tacos are to die for.) Unfortunately, I might have had too many martinis. Not so good on a couple of levels. Altogether a very fun night though.

Saturday was not such a success. Missed the spinning class...my friend that I was going with also had too many martinis :) We'll do the class next week. Anyways, I woke up and immediately ate a couple of tacos on flour tortillas. I still had a lot of meat leftover, so I made tacos for lunch. I was out of flour tortillas, so I fried up some corn tortillas. This is the killer. I had 3! I'm telling you...they are difficult to resist. Later in the evening, I made the kids dinner, but I just ate a bowl of soup. My husband was supposed to be picking up something for the two of us, but I was getting hungry. By the time he went, I was no longer that hungry. I still ordered something that I knew would still be good today. Hummus with chicken. mmmm... I did eat a little bit, but I wasn't very hungry.

I know that yesterday was not great in any way, but I don't think it was enough to really to do a ton of damage. Pizza would have been worse imo...and that seems to be the usual Saturday fare.

Today, we are going to visit the in-laws. I'm not sure what is in store for us food-wise. I will try to be good. I'm going to eat before we leave (probably some hummus).

Warning: This next paragraph is just random ramblings.

I return to work tomorrow, and this could be good or bad for my eating. Routine is usually a good thing. However, being busier could cause me to make bad choices. I'm hoping that being around my friends every day will not tempt me into going out to lunch. I must bring my lunch and eat it. I will probably just start packing a sandwich when I pack the kids' sandwiches. If I can keep it at my desk, I will be more likely to eat it. Too often I put off going into the kitchen at work to heat up my lunch. Then someone asks if I want to go to Hard Rock, and I say yes almost every time. So weak. If I have my food right there, I will probably eat it when I should and I will not be so weak. I will eat my breakfast bar before leaving for work, so that I'm not tempted by breakfast sandwiches from wherever. Coffee can wait till I get to work I think. If not, I'll start making some before I leave. Dinner is trickier. I think the kids will already be fed when I get home. It's sometimes easier to eat better when I'm just feeding me. It's also easier to stop at fast food when it's just for one person though. I must resist that urge...must must must. Again, it's going to be in the prior planning.

Hope everyone else is doing the weekend better than I am :)

OOPS!

So last night I was all ready to go to boot camp (early even), and I went to get the kids in the van...no keys to be found anywhere. We searched for about an hour, but I finally accepted the fact that my husband probably just took both sets to work on accident (this ended up to be true). So I missed. I'd like to say that I used the bowflex instead, but that would be a lie. I did 10 pushups though :P I was going to do more, but I didn't. Oh well. What's done is done. I am supposed to join a friend tomorrow morning for a spinning class, but I'm having a little party tonight...hope I still make the class.

This next part is for Rebecca...another shopping adventure :)

I'm going back to work on Monday, and I thought I should update my wardrobe a little. The last time I bought business attire was in January or February. I was so excited to be getting mostly all size 12's. I looked a ton thinner in those than I did in my 16's that I was still wearing, despite the 45 lbs gone. I've still been wearing those 12's mixed in with a couple of size 10 pants that I bought a few months ago. Since that last shopping spree, I've lost an additional 20 pounds and who knows how many inches. The 10's that I bought a few months ago get loose by the time I get to work usually, so I decided it was time to get some 8's. I bought 2 size 8 suits and some separates. I didn't go too crazy, because this is not my final resting point.

Everything was 40% - 50% off, so I got it all for $130. Actually, I had to fight for an additional $20 off. They had this coupon in their shoe flyer for $20 off any $100 purchase. The coupon listed what it excluded, but it didn't say it was for shoes specifically. The cashier, who was way nice, kept telling me that it was for shoes only. I asked for a manager, who wasn't available...whatever...I wasn't leaving until I got my $20 off. Finally, after about 10 minutes, the pricing dept (?) said it was good for anything. Ugh. It was just the principle of the matter by that point, but I swear I was about to sue the company :) I must have been in a feisty mood yesterday, because I am so not like that usually.

Ok, back to the shopping stuff...my new suits are a hair snug, but they still look very nice. I'm always amazed at how much thinner I look in clothes that actually fit. When I was looking in the mirror, I realized that I've turned into one of "those" girls at work...the young trendy professionals. I've always been told I look much younger than my age. Now I'm getting the body back.

My next stop was at VS for some seamless intimates :) The girl asked what size I was looking for, so I said probably Large. My remaining weight is mostly in my lower half (genetics). She looked at me and said I probably only needed Medium. I took her advice, and she was absolutely right.

My final stop was Macy's. I got this seamless Flexee's thing, which is supposed to smooth you out. Wow! This makes my suits look even way nicer. I would highly recommend this product to any of the ladies that might be reading this. It is worth every bit of the $25. I think it's very similar to Spanx. The best part of this stop is that I found out I still had $75 left on a gift card from last Christmas :)

The whole point to my story is this: For some reason, I think I have a hard time believing that I am actually a size 8 or a medium. I keep thinking that I'm going to go to the store and find out that they were wrong, and I should have been in 10's or even 12's all along. So far, this hasn't really happened. Don't get me wrong, 8's could still look better on me, but 10's would be too large. It's so weird to go into a store knowing that I am an average size. Rebecca made a comment on a post about how she enjoyed reading about my shopping adventures, probably because of my ability to admire myself. I don't know if I admire myself. I'm just in constant disbelief that it's really me. I think I'm actually just trying to convince myself that I look fine or good even. When I look at it rationally, I look fine...considering the fact that I'm in my 30's and have 4 kids. I'm about the same size I was before I had kids...except there is evidence of past pregnancy that will never go away (stretch marks, extra belly, etc...). I just think that I'll never ever be satisfied, and maybe this is not such a bad thing? Maybe I need that dissatisfaction to keep me pushing forward to get that body that I never thought possible before. I don't know the right answer. Confidence is good, but maybe my confidence is fake...actually insecurity?

I don't really know what I'm trying to say here. Maybe you guys of all people will understand though.

I will try to take some pics of me in my new suits later if I think about it.

One last note. I was really irritated when I saw how many cool suits they had at the store for average height people. Being petite is so limiting. I know it's about demand and all that, but I still hate it. I sometimes wish I were taller...even though I don't mind being a shortie for the most part. Maybe now that I'm getting a better shape, I'll get more adventurous and buy suits online. I didn't try on anything yesterday that looked bad on me, so hopefully the same would be true for online orders. It's funny how when I was really fat, I used to get mad at the clothes for looking so awful on me. (I did understand that it was more about me though and not the clothes.)

Sorry for the super long post today :)

Boot Camp - Day 2

Today was a great day in general. I got reacquainted with someone from high school today - well, even more acquainted. We've talked via email & telephone for a little while, but we met up at the great Tim Horton's this morning for coffee. I was good and only got coffee and yogurt w/fruit. This was made possible by eating a breakfast bar before I left to take the kids to school.

I will not name this friend yet, but I think that she may be joining us here soon. She has already successfully lost 50 pounds on her own and already workouts regularly. She is just looking to finish off the last 20 pounds and get encouragement for her continued fitness goals.

I had my second boot camp session tonight. Let me just say that I'm still sore from Monday...but in a good way. I love being able to feel the sore abs when I'm walking or doing other exercises that are considered for the arms or other areas. I know this is why they call it the core. The abs seem to tie into everything. Everything else is sore too. It even hurts to sit down.

Here's a brief rundown of what we did tonight:

(3 rounds of each circuit)

Circuit 1:
5 mins on stepmill, farmer walk w/2 - 25 lb plates, bicep curls - 21's
Circuit 2: 20 pushups w/S Ball, frog jumps, something called "around the worlds" w/25 lb plate, 10 shoulder presses w/25 lb plate, 1 minute plank holds using S Ball.

That was pretty much it tonight...upper body with a bit of cardio. I'm always afraid of the upper body nights, but I usually find them quite easy and enjoyable. Tomorrow I work with other trainer. I don't know what we'll be doing - probably lower body.

I also learned that our pool equipment finally came in. Um....this means that we'll be working out in the POOL?!?!? Glad I've already gotten through the "wearing a swimsuit in public for the first time" hurdle. Scary stuff!

Ok. That's all that I'll bore you with tonight...more tomorrow after Boot Camp - session 3.

Not much to say today

I'm not going to workout today, since I have boot camp tomorrow and Thursday. I've learned from the past that 4 days in a row is just too much for me at that intensity. I will, however, go up to the gym for cardio on either Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. My eating has been good today thus far. I'm hoping to eat plenty of good things earlier in the day to avoid overdoing it at night. So far I've had a breakfast bar, yogurt w/fruit, coffee w/cream and splenda, bowl of chili, hardboiled egg. I will probably have another bowl of chili tonight (it was way good).

That's all I have to say today really....except that I'm getting more sore by the minute.

Please check out phenom's blog. He's trying to lose 55 lbs by Tigers opening day (next March).

Quickie - Edited

My weekend was pretty horrid eating-wise. I really didn't exercise any self-control at all. I'm blaming it on not enough luck wished for me on my last blog...so joking. Anyways, I went for a very short walk Friday evening, but other than that...nothing :(

Today is a new day. I haven't been great, but I don't think I've been bad either. I picked up the kids from school today and told them to get their homework done early so that we could go to the gym. They absolutely love the child center there, so this serves two purposes. They get their homework done in a timely fashion, and they motivate me to go. I could have gone earlier in the day, but no. I guess I should get used to this routine anyways, since I'll be going back to work next week. So far...so good. 3 out of 4 are all done with homework, and the 4th one is almost done. This is a good night.

Ok. Going to serve dinner so that we can get out the door.

Oh, one last thing...I've decided to sign up for the next boot camp session at the gym. It will be well worth it to get me back into the whole workout routine. I can't wait to get some of my tone back.

*Edit*

I went to the gym tonight and asked when the next Boot Camp session would be starting. To my surprise, they told me I could start tonight! I was really happy, because I really didn't want to do cardio only tonight anyways. There is a new instructor for the class, whom I thought did an excellent job. It's good to switch up trainers, in my opinion. She has different ways, and I am surprised at how jello-y my legs still feel 3 hours later. I will be going M W Th for the next 12 weeks.

I am going to be soooo smokin' by Christmas. Look out, Size 6, here I come!

The Great 100 Calorie Snack Pack Debate

First, let me just say that I have been eating well. Nothing bad to report here. Yesterday I went to my old office to have lunch with a co-worker, and I saw everyone and the compliments were abundant...yeah yeah yeah. Same story :) I also ordered a small lunch plate (Ahi Sushi). That's literally all it was...4 small pieces of sushi...absolutely delicious and completely satisfying.

Now onto the important part of today's blog. I found this article to be very interesting. While I disagree with his point that we don't have a choice (see Billy's blog today), I agree that we have mental obstacles that often deter us from making good choices. However, when it comes right down to it, the choice is ours. It's just so important to eliminate temptation where possible.

Please be sure to at least read to the point where it discusses the chip experiment. I found it fascinating, because it's absolutely true. I would have reacted the same way as the test subjects.

I'm going out of town this weekend, so wish me luck on the eating front. I'm not quite sure what types of temptation I'll be facing. I must stay strong :) Maybe I'll go for a walk after dinner.

Interesting Article

This study suggests that exercise is just as effective as drugs in treating major depression. Makes sense to me!

I'm Back

Ok. So I've been back, but I've not been back...if that makes sense :) But now I'm back.

My weekend was absolutely amazing. I had the best time with the best hostess around (Kirsten, of course). Of course, when I try to think of what we did, all I can come up with is...prepare food, eat food, and go buy more food? My kind of weekend! Ok. I'm kidding for the most part. I can't even express how blessed I am to have this girl as my friend. Yes, we had our fun eating great food, but we also got some physical activity in. We went to the zoo on Saturday. On Sunday, we went for a couple of very nice walks (I think we guessed it was around 4 miles or more altogether?). What a great area to live in. Lots of nature to enjoy.

Eating on Monday wasn't great. Eating on Tuesday was better but still not great. Eating today has been great. I also hit the gym. I really am back on track. I can feel it. I mean...it's not exactly my fault that I got off track. My eating hasn't been too out of control, and I really couldn't exercise much due to the surgery. I've been to the gym twice since my doctor gave me the thumbs up last Thursday...not to mention the walking over the weekend.

Well, I think that about covers it. Have a great day!

Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance

In my opinion, one of my biggest problems this week has been breakfast. I am not hungry when I take the kids to school, but this quickly changes while I'm in the car...just as I'm approaching McDonalds or Tim Hortons or whatever. Even if I'm still not hungry, I want coffee, so I stop somewhere and then yield to the temptation of food as well. So, last night, I set my coffee maker on auto and took coffee with me on the drive. I also ate oatmeal for breakfast before leaving to take the kids to school. Guess what? I didn't even think about stopping anywhere. I also left my debit card and cash at home just in case.

The other thing I did last night was lay out my workout clothes. After I got back from taking the kids to school, I did some stuff around the house and then hit the gym. What a great workout! 30 minutes on the elliptical, 10 minutes on the stairclimber, and then 1 mile on the treadmill (about 10 minutes). It wasn't where I was when I left off a month ago, but I think that I did very well overall...and I enjoyed it! I didn't do any strength training, but I might use my bowflex tonight. I also have a lot of chicken breast and lettuce in the refrigerator just waiting for me to make a salad out of it.

Ok. It might be Monday before my next blog entry. Have a great weekend!

Time to Blog

It's been a little while since my last post, but I promised someone that I would do it today, so here goes:

I haven't been eating that well at all this week. It's so incredibly stupid how you can get to a whole new low and just sabotage it within a few days. I would really like to understand the psychology behind all that.

I decided yesterday that it was over though, and I did better today...not stellar, but certainly better. I really hate that I seem to have lost some tone in the past few weeks from very little physical activity. The good news is that my doctor said that I can get back to the gym...no restrictions. Yay! Now the question is: do I really want to? Of course I do, but it might be hard to get there the first time (tomorrow). I'm kind of hoping that my little break might have reset something in me, so that I'll see some nice quick results. I know that I've been really concentrating on the direction I'd like to go in. I might even sign up for another boot camp session just to get me back into it all.

Other than that, I've been so incredibly busy with the kids and their school stuff. I really don't know how it's all going to go once I get back to work in just a few short weeks. Hopefully I'm getting into a good routine right now that will help me to stay organized then. I hope I don't have to start going to the gym in the morning, because I can't see that happening. I love my snooze button.

My most exciting news is that I am going to Chicago this weekend to visit the Comment Fairy (aka Kirsten). I seriously cannot wait to get there.

Dally in the Alley

Yesterday we headed out to Dally in the Alley. We parked kind of far out, so it was nice to get in some exercise. Actually, it sucked because I was wearing these sandals with 3 inch heels. Oh well. I was starving when we got there, so the hubby and I went to go grab a bite to eat. I decided on a shish kabob (they actually gave me 2). They were delicious and they were only $5...cheaper than I could even buy uncooked at the grocery store.

The best part was that I got to spend some much needed time with friends. After Dally, we headed over to Twingo's. It was kind of weird, because this is a very nice restaurant that was supposed to be turning into a club of sorts for the night. We ended up ordering food. I wasn't on my best behavior, but I suppose it could have been worse...seafood chowder (broth based) and then smoked mozzarella sticks (yes, they were fried) and an arugula salad. Hopefully the walking and dancing helped to burn off some of the calories.

The club thing was meh. This is a monthly event that we used to go to all the time, but it was at a completely different venue. It just didn't gel in my opinion, so we decided to head over to Corktown Tavern for Hot House. This was much better, but I was exhausted by this point. We stayed for just under an hour before heading home. I mean, it was 2:00 am, but we usually stay till about 4. Oh well... :)

Overall, a good day, but it wasn't magical. I guess you can't create that...it just has to happen.

***Addendum***

I wore a stretchy green top with a short(er) denim skirt. This is probably the first time that I've worn a short skirt since I was 21 maybe? Big step for me.

Clothes Shopping

I met a friend for breakfast this morning. It really was long overdue, and it was nice to get some things cleared up. Good friends can do that. No confrontation really...just areas of irritation. I love my friends, because we keep it real. No drama. Well...very little drama. Anyways, I'm a happy girl today...and I feel so lucky to have so many great friends.

After breakfast, we went to this ghetto clothing store to buy some cheap clothes...I'm talking $3 tops. Unfortunately, we had to deal with the awful staff there. I swear I haven't experienced that bad of service in a long time...AND they only allowed 3 items of clothing at a time in the fitting rooms. Very frustrating. Anyways, it is getting more and more fun to go clothes shopping for the most part. I'm to the point where almost everything looks fine or good or HOT. The only reason some things don't look too great is because of my petite frame. Some regular sizes are ok, but others' waists fall where my hips are. I seriously have one of the shortest torsos I've ever seen.

I really wanted to talk about stretchy clothing today. In the past, I really had to avoid very stretchy tops, because all the stretchy material did was shift my blubber around and make it look worse than where it was in the first place or it just accentuated my belly roll. I think all that is changing now. The stretchy material seems to just hold everything in place now. I ended up buying this halter top thingee...the kind that I'd wear to a club. I don't know that I'll ever actually wear it out, but for $3, I thought I could at least just put it on at home and look at myself in it :) Even the horizontal stripes on it don't seem to make me look fat. It actually looks FAB! My friend was talking on the phone and just stopped talking when she saw me. Ok...you get the point. It looked good. My real point was that the lycra or spandex or whatever it is might be good for me now.

My other point is that it's true that the belly fat is usually the last to go (at least for girls). I still have enough left, but it's nice to see it finally shrinking.

In other exciting news, I get to go out to Detroit tomorrow for fun. Dally in the Alley is going on, and there are a ton of fun afterparties going on. It's been a while since I've been out to the city, so I'm super excited. I just hope it doesn't get rained out.

Random stuff today...

I really am getting upset at the number of obese children I'm seeing around these days. I'm sure I'm just noticing it more because of the kids being back at school. It's one thing for me as an adult to be obese, but to allow my children to get that way is simply not an option. My kids are not skinny by any means, but they are not fat at all. I just think that if my kids were getting fat, I'd be making some serious changes in this house. How can these parents allow this to happen to their kids. I know that some kids are naturally heavier set, but there are so many complete families that are obese. I just don't get it. I've heard people talk about this before, and I've heard all the excuses and the lies...like it's ok to be fat or it's just in our genes to be "heavy". I really don't know if anyone here has obese children, so I apologize if this offends anyone, but it just really saddens me to see so much of it. Some people might think it's unhealthy for kids to worry about their weight and everything, but it is our job as parents to teach them about proper nutrition. I want them to know that being overweight is unhealthy.

Next...I watched the Biggest Loser last night (from my DVR). It was fine, but I thought it was totally stupidly cheesy for them to make the audience say, Did you keep the weight off...with the hostess. Then, they compared their current weight with their starting weight rather than the weight from the end of the season. Of course, they were all thinner than when they started out. Overall, it really was a nothing episode geared toward getting people excited about the new season. Beck and I were talking about the show yesterday...about how it's great they lost the weight and everything, but how hard can it really be when you are sent away to work out for how many hours a day and have all the right food choices right in front of you. We are the real winners here, because we're doing this and incorporating all of these changes into our real lives as we go. This is real...right here...not to take away from their successes of course. I do think that the show played a part in me getting healthy though...as I sat on the couch and watched it, wishing I could be thin. ha! Every little bit of inspiration helps I guess.

Yesterday, I was sitting here at the computer thinking about how bored I was, so I decided to go for a walk. I ended up walking over 5 miles. God that felt great. I'm really sore today though. Funny how it only takes a couple weeks of inactivity to soften some of those muscles that seem to take so long to build. I can't wait to get back to running.

Just a couple cheesy new full body pics...and a fattie before pic

And here's the before pic (again)...

Nothing much to say lately

I haven't posted in a while, but it's not because I've been avoiding...just don't have much to report I guess. I ate more yesterday...probably a little too much, but that's ok. I still feel good.

Yesterday was the first day of school for the kiddies. What a strange but wonderful experience to send all 4 of them away for the whole day :) Of course Audrey was the funniest because it was her first time going to school ever. She's very outgoing, so I knew she would love it. She was so exhausted though and started to fall asleep on the couch after school. I made her dinner and she headed toward the stairs. I asked if she was going to bed and she said yes, good night. ha...at 5 o'clock! Overstimulated I guess. She didn't get up until I turned on her light this morning. This is a new school for them, but they all loved it and already made some friends. It's really nice that I'm not working right now, because I am a little more relaxed without the stress of work. They are at school again right now. Ahhhh...

I ran into our crazy carpooler mom from last year. They switched over to the same school as we did, unfortunately. Anyways, she was a little taken aback at how good I was looking. We carpooled until the middle of June, so it's good to know that even though I haven't lost that many pounds, I must look a lot more toned. I mentioned that I'd like to lose another 15 pounds, but she said she didn't think I should lose more than 5. Not that I care what she thinks. She is crazy after all. I will lose another 15...eventually.

Last week was Audrey's 5th birthday. I just realized this morning that I'm at the weight that I averaged before I had any kids...5 years after the birth of my last one. I don't think there's any real significance attached to that, but it was kind of interesting to me :)

Interesting but fun evening...

I went to my first bachelorette party ever last night. I've been trying to think about why I've never been to one before, and I don't quite know. Maybe I've typically had more male than female friends or maybe my friends never get married - just live together. Then there were the church years...no real bachelorette parties going on there. Overall it was cheesy but fun I guess...penis accessories and all. We went to dinner then hit a couple of clubs. Luckily there were other bachelorette parties going on too, so I didn't feel too embarrassed.

What I really wanted to talk about was a girl that I met at the party last night. She really was so much fun...and absolutely adorable. Do you ever just look at someone and just envy their body? Dumb question. I'm sure we all do. Well, I was extremely envious of her body. It's exactly how I'd like mine to be. There are a lot of times when I'd like to ask people what size they are (so that I can get an idea of what I'd like to be). My inner filter usually prevails though. Last night, I decided to go for it. To my relief, she said she was a 6. Size 6 is only a size down from where I'm at. I can so do this. I'm thinking 10 pounds should get me there. Size 8 is perfectly fine, but 6 is even better...and still curvacious.

I told her that I'd lost a lot of weight, and she told me that she'd lost 60 pounds about 6 years ago. That's always cool to hear. I could tell that she works out by her arms. She said what we've all been saying all along. It's a very simple concept when you get right down to it. Eat the right stuff and exercise. Simple.

There was a point in the conversation that she thought I said I wanted to lose 20 pounds, and she looked at me like I was crazy. Then she said that I was already really small. The fact is that I would like to lose another 20 pounds if I could, but it's always cool to hear someone say that I don't need to...especially someone that already has what I'd consider a perfect body.

Anyways, this might be just the inspiration that I need to get me past this 10 pound hurdle. I can't wait till I can exercise again. I was really on the right track before my surgery. Luckily, I've not been doing anything to backtrack during my down time, but I still probably have another month before I go back to work. I might be hitting some of you up for advice on Full-Assing it into a size 6. Of course, knowing that Rebecca's buying some 8's helps too :)
